IWD - Women Who Changed Fashion

Written by

Every year, March 8th is celebrated as International Women's Day (IWD) to celebrate the cultural, political, and socio-economical achievements of women. This year, the theme for IWD is "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow". The goal behind IWD is to spread the message of gender equality, celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in different spheres, and work towards building a society free of all gender biases, stereotypes, gender parity and discrimination. On this day, we would like to appreciate the strong, intelligent, talented and simply extraordinary women that we get to work with, as well as the ladies who left their mark on the fashion industry.

Designers are the celebrities of the fashion industry. From Jeanne Lanvin, who began her empire as an entrepeneur before the 19th century, to the thoroughly modern Rei Kawakubo, who has carved out a successful nice of fashion meets art, women have created designs that changed fashion and still influence us today. Like for example Coco Chanel, the ultimate classic designer who defined the notion of staples that would last a lifetime. She was also one of the first fashion designers to create boxy, shorter and easy to move in pieces, freeing women from their tight corsets and Poiret-inspired skirts. Or, Miuccia Prada, transforming the leatherworking brand Prada into a modern fashion powerhouse. With a Ph.D. in political science, Miuccia has spearheaded the vision of intellectual and complicated references in fashion.

We are proud to represent amazing female fashion designers and visionaries, like dogstar (Australia, designer Masayo Yasuki), Trine Kryger Simonsen (Denmark), and Amano Colab. by Lorena Laing (Australia) on the US Market, and are thankful to all buyers for their support. We feel lucky to be working with strong female leaders (store owners and buyers) and admire their vision, courage and resolve, especially during these trying times.

At JP Represents, we are a mother-daughter team, where the mother very much brought up the daughter as a strong and independent role model, giving the next generation a vision for strength to grow into.

“When women lose themselves, the world loses its way. We do not need more selfless women. What we need right now is more women who have detoxed themselves so completely from the world's expectations that they are full of nothing but themselves. What we need are women who are full of themselves. A woman who is full of herself knows and trusts herself enough to say and do what must be done.” - Glennon Doyle, Untamed.
